Emmanuel Ofosu Mensah
FAAB PhD Student
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University for Development Studies, Ghana. During my time there, I interned at various research centers, including the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research, a German-based facility in Ghana. As a research assistant in the microbiology and biochemistry lab, I contributed to a team focused on developing strategies to mitigate the effects of sickle cell disease. My responsibilities included blood sample collection, DNA extraction, DNA analysis, identifying different sickling genotypes using electrophoresis and PCR, and examining the effects of hydroxyurea on biochemical markers.
After graduating, I worked as a medical laboratory technician for a year, where I handled tasks such as sample collection, blood and fluid analysis, biochemical tests, COVID testing, and other microbiological analyses. In 2021, I pursued a master’s degree in Biotechnology at Ural Federal University in Russia. My research centered on extracting fucoidan from brown seaweed and exploring its applications in drug delivery. The fucoidan extracted in the lab showed promising results in encapsulating and delivering piperine, a bioactive compound, with findings published in top international journals.
Currently, I am pursuing a PhD at Macquarie University, collaborating closely with the FAAB research group. I am excited to be part of FAAB due to their expertise in training students to become professionals and bridging the gap between academia and industry. Through FAAB, I am connected to AlgOZ Solutions, an industrial partner working on the “Discovery of Polysaccharides from Brown Seaweeds” project, which aims to extract polysaccharides while utilizing the biomass
